As the 2024 NBA trade deadline draws near, the Los Angeles Lakers are talking about the league. L.A. has until February 8th to decide whether to continue with their current people or make changes. Bruce Brown of the Toronto Raptors and Dejounte Murray of the Atlanta Hawks seem to be the top two candidates if a change is made.

The Hawks are mediocre once again and are considering a hefty four-year deal for Murray, so the Lakers have been after him for a few weeks now. Los Angeles is trying to take advantage of Atlanta's reluctance to shell out so much cash for a club that consistently fails to get beyond the first round.

Conversely, Brown was a top target for the Lakers over the summer, but the Indiana Pacers offered him an offer that was more than what the Lakers could afford. After that, they sent him to the Raptors in exchange for Pascal Siakam, and the Lakers recognized an opening right away.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the Lakers, via Shams Charania of The Athletic, are apparently dead set on Brown and Murray as their trade deadline targets:

"I've been informed that the Lakers are still keeping an eye on two guys. I believe that Bruce Brown Jr. of Toronto and Dejounte Murray of Atlanta were the two players at the top of their lists of targets heading into the trade deadline. I believe they are still keeping an eye on those two individuals. I anticipate that those discussions will go on for the next week, the next week and a half, or the next two weeks.

If they can work out a deal, Brown and Murray are both interesting options that could benefit the Lakers. Given the Raptors' allegedly high asking price, it seems like Murray may be easier to obtain than Brown. However, the Lakers are undoubtedly making every effort to try to strengthen the club at this time.

In order to avoid a position in the Play-In Tournament, the Lakers must finish four games below the No. 6 seed at 22-22. They also won't entirely restructure their roster before the deadline, in contrast to the previous season. Therefore, they must make progress primarily with the players they currently have on staff, even if they sign one of these two superstars.

Dejounte Murray is a terrific asset to the Lakers.
One of the most difficult aspects of trade deadline season is telling the difference between genuine rumors and conjecture. However, there is enough evidence to conclude that Murray joining the Lakers is a plausible scenario and that the rumor has merit.
